A strong ICP for welding distributors is defined by recurring routeable spend, technical complexity, and a believable reason to switch. If the ICP only says 'companies that weld,' it is too broad to support good outbound.
Start with Gas and Consumable Density
The best-fit accounts use gases, wire, filler metals, tips, abrasives, and PPE repeatedly. Recurring consumption matters more than one-off machine purchases because it creates both margin and retention.
Prioritize Accounts Large Enough to Matter
A 25-welder shop and a 200-welder plant are very different opportunities. Size, shift count, and production intensity should be part of the ICP because they change both account value and service expectations.
Ready to turn this into pipeline?
Prospect AI runs research, copy, and multi-channel outreach as one system, so consistent pipeline stops depending on heroics.
Look for Technical and Process Complexity
Accounts become more attractive when they care about procedures, alloys, gas mixes, fume or safety issues, automation, or quality requirements. Complexity raises switching friction, but it also protects margin once you are in.
Map the Buying Motion Into the ICP
A good ICP describes not just the plant but the committee. Facilities with visible operations, engineering, purchasing, and safety roles are easier to multi-thread than shops where the decision path is opaque.
Filter for Route and Service Fit
The account still has to work inside branch coverage, delivery economics, and service responsiveness. Revenue alone does not make a good-fit customer if the route burden is wrong.
Include Triggerability
The best ICP accounts create frequent reasons to prospect: hiring, expansions, project wins, equipment upgrades, or incumbent service pain. Those signals make outbound far more efficient.
Be Clear About Exclusions
Very small, low-frequency, commodity-only buyers with weak route fit can still buy occasionally, but they do not belong in the core outbound ICP. Precision in what to exclude is what makes the ICP commercially useful.
